dc talk is the second Christian group ever to achieve double platinum success.
Nashville, TN -- ForeFront Records announced today the RIAA double platinum certification of dc talks album, Jesus Freak, as well as the RIAA gold album certification of Welcome to the Freak Show-Live in Concert. This achievement makes them the second group to garner double platinum success in the Christian format.
ForeFront Records President Greg Ham stated, "When I think of dc talk, I am reminded of their excellence and dedication to making things work - in the studio, on the stage and behind the scenes. Jesus Freak was the record that cemented the career of dc talk within our industry."
Released in 1995, Jesus Freak produced five #1 singles. The project garnered many industry awards including a Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album, a Billboard Music Award for Best Contemporary Christian Album, a Billboard Music Video Award for "Jesus Freak" and numerous Dove Awards. The Doves were awarded in the following categories: Best Short Form Video ("Jesus Freak"), Best Rock Album, Best Rock Recorded Song ("Like It, Love It, Need It" and "Jesus Freak") and Song of the Year ("Jesus Freak"). "From the fractured guitar opening to the hidden poem, Jesus Freak was the first dc talk record I was truly proud of. It had heart, soul, passion and a serious pair of wings," states group member Kevin Max.
Recorded while on the "Jesus Freak Tour," Welcome to the Freak Show-Live in Concert was released in 1997 and gave the band a second Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album. Recorded in front of sell out crowds of over 700,000, the project encapsulated the dynamic stage show of dc talk.
With a career that has spanned more than 10 years in the Christian music industry, dc talk (Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait and Kevin Max), has not only experienced unparalleled success but has opened the doors for other artists. "The success of dc talk was something we never imagined while selling cassettes door-to-door at Liberty University," states McKeehan, "it was just three friends getting together and making music. To think that 10 years later we would be putting out a greatest hits record and have a double platinum record with Jesus Freak goes well beyond our expectations. In my opinion, dc talk will always be three friends getting together to make music."
With more than five million career units sold, three Grammy Awards, 14 Dove Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, three Billboard Music Video Awards and numerous nominations to their credit, dc talk pioneered the youth-focused Christian rock movement and has become the highest-selling contemporary Christian music group. "We were three friends who met in a dorm room at a small town college," commented Tait. "At first, 10,000 records seemed like a lofty goal. Two million was unthinkable."
When asked about the accomplishment, Troy Vest, Sr. Director of Field Sales and Marketing for Chordant Distribution commented, "The double platinum record is an incredible celebration of a career and ministry that will continue to see unprecedented success. We are honored to be in partnership with dc talk and the teams at ForeFront and True Artist Management." Added Ham, "Over the years, I have watched the band grow individually and as a group while remaining faithful to their calling to make music that engages the youth culture. We are proud to be partners with dc talk and we celebrate these achievements as a team."
ForeFront Records and dc talk are preparing to release intermission: the greatest hits to the public on November 21st. The seventh ForeFront release from the band consists of 13 previous hits, two re-mixes and two new tracks totaling over 79 minutes of audio. "With the intermission project, we get to relive, along with our fans, memorable musical moments," Tait said.
