It's inevitable. When you're a Christian, you often evaluate the
greater purpose of why you do what you do ˜ whether you're in a
specific "ministry" role, working in the professional arena or
staying home with your kids. Even in a job like mine as an editor for
CCMmagazine.com, I find myself questioning exactly God has me in this
position. Is Christian music really nothing more than a niche market
that doesn't have much effect on the rest of the world or does it
truly make a difference? These are questions I wrestle with on a
weekly and sometimes daily basis.
But occasionally, there are moments like last Wednesday night's
American Music Awards where the mission seems crystal clear.
In case you missed the festivities, the musical performances that
particular evening ran the gamut with everything featured from Usher
to Lenny Kravitz, Britney Spears to Kid Rock and several other pop
culture icons. But among all the awards, glitz and rock star glamour,
a not-so-familiar face to most, Yolanda Adams, won the ceremony's
first award in a gospel category. In her acceptance speech, she not
only acknowledged her creator and thanked those who've helped her
along the way, but made the most of her two minutes with class,
dignity and a non-threatening display of the difference it makes to
have a relationship with Christ. And that's not even mentioning her
performance which was also stellar indeed. It truly was a great
representation of what the Christian music arena has to offer and
gives a lot of hope for more visibility in the future.
