Local Eagle Scout Project Works to Prevent Teen Suicide
ORANGE COUNTY, CA. -- Recycling, preventing suicide, and community involvement: while seemingly diverse and distinct from each other, Madison Shuford addresses each of these in his upcoming Eagle Scout project. He created the endeavor to bring awareness to My Broken Palace, a Rancho Santa Margarita based non-profit that works to prevent teen suicide. Madison hails from Boy Scout Troop 700 in Aliso Viejo.
Madison is leading a team of volunteers who will reach out to 500 local families in the areas surrounding his school, Trabuco Hills High School. Through a can and bottle recycling drive, the team will raise awareness and provide information about My Broken Palace. The first two collection dates will be August 17 and September 14 from 8am to 10am at Solana Park in Rancho Santa Margarita.
“Most Boy Scouts do some kind of construction project, but I wanted my Eagle Scout project to be about helping people in a personal way,” said Madison. Madison chose to support My Broken Palace in his early teens by frequently volunteering and attending events. This passion was fueled by the uniqueness of My Broken Palace’s mission: to bring hope and healing to struggling teens.
“Most suicide prevention is done by hotlines. My Broken Palace is different because they interact with people both before and during a crisis. It is like a mini-Facebook where everyone shares the same problems and has the chance to talk to one another and not feel alone,” Madison said. “They are a community instead of an informational website or one time conversation at an event.”
"It's exciting to see when others find new and creative ways to help raise awareness for such a big need. Madison will hopefully inspire others nationwide to think outside the box and get involved with My Broken Palace.” shares Scott Brinson, Executive Director for My Broken Palace.
To take part in the Recycling Drive, please bring your aluminum cans and plastic or glass bottles to Solana Park on August 17 and September 14 from 8am to 10am. Google map link: http://bit.ly/16klI30
