Weep for Joy
A Play in two Acts written by David Payne

When C S Lewis met the American writer Joy Gresham a meeting of the minds soon became a meeting of the heart. Here is a heartwarming story of two people from two different worlds who find themselves thrown together thanks to a mutual love of literature. Both authors in their own right, they revel in debate and humor and their initial meetings are at times quite hilarious. Friendship, however, soon turns into love and a marriage filled with much joy not least because they were united in their Christian faith. That faith was to be severely tested when Joy was struck down with terminal cancer plunging both into a very uncertain future. Joy facing death itself and Lewis facing the prospect of life without the woman who had changed his life. You will laugh, you may shed tears as you see two people drawing on their faith both in the happiest and bleakest days of life.

Actors: David Payne (C.S. Lewis), Jordan Scott (Joy Gresham) and Gregory Williams Welsch (Warnie Lewis)

David Payne

David Payne

David has built a considerable reputation both as a writer and an actor. His portrayals of C S Lewis in various productions have received many accolades and his one-man play An Evening with C S Lewis has been lauded as nothing short of a Master Class in acting. Once again, his role as C S Lewis in Weep for Joy proves all the tributes are well merited. For a man who failed all his English exams as a boy, David has proved that exams are not necessarily the final arbiter in becoming an accomplished playwright. Weep for Joy is ample proof that David can capture an audience with a style that allows a rich and authentic blend of humor and heartache, love and anger, joy and sorrow and faith and skepticism.
